Skincare 101: Probiotics!

I recently became a bit obsessed with skincare. Since lockdown, I decided to study about my skin and how to make it look healthier especially after months locked in my house. I tried many products, some good which I keep talking about on the blog, some bad for the type of skin I have.

I came across recently to probiotics products and I have to admit they’re life saviours. But what do they do and why they’re the hype in the beauty industry?

Well probiotics always existed as a support to our digestive system. They are live bacteria and yests found in supplements, yoghurts and other things and help fighting bloating, cramps and other issues. Now try to adapt them to the skin. We obviously don’t suffer from skin cramps or bloating, so here’s what they do. They calm our skin and support the barrier in order to make the skin look healthier and protected. Sun damage, pollution and other stuff can unbalance the skin’s microbiome leading to issues such as acne, dry skin, redness. Probiotics regulate natural balance and body immune response. They strengthen and rebuild the skin’s barrier.

It’s important to understand that probiotics alone won’t do anything, they must be associated with other products.

Tip: When choosing probiotics make sure you buys products with Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and prebiotic sugars like xylitol as ingredients. Also they’re quite delicate products, and most of them expire after six months and need particular storage attention, so make sure you read that as well when buying.

Many many brands nowadays study probiotics and implement them into their skincare products, however I found possibly the best brand that made a whole skincare range out of probiotics, Aurelia Skincare.

Aurelia Skincare is a british brand, using Bio Organic products, it’s cruelty free and all their products are made without sulphates and parabens in order not to harm your skin with chemicals. Their products are made to help build, restore and protect the skin’s barrier. “They calm the natural immune triggers in your skin caused by pollution and stress, and reduce the damage these can cause to collagen, elastin and healthy cells”. As I mentioned before, because I’m new to this whole probiotics skincare, I decided to purchase only few products to start with.

Aurelia Miracle cleanser contains chamomile, eucalyptus, rosemary and bergamot. I think it’s pointless for me to say that it smells amazing, bergamot reminds me of home and my skin feels flawless every time I use it. A gentle cream cleanser removes all the make up and dirt your skin collect during the day. My skin is brighter and clean after using, which I do twice a day. It comes with a soft muslin cloth, extremely delicate for your skin. It can be used as a 3 minutes mask as well, for delicate skin. To be used in the morning.

Revitalise & Glow Serum with Jasmine, Plumeria, Tuberose and Mandarine. It’s a very lightweight serum that restore and balance the skin making it glowing. It trasforms dull skin to a glowy one. Dullness can be caused by pollution. It also naturally smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. There’s also hibiscus to help reduce oxidative stress, as well as baobab to revitalise the skin and Kigelia to firm.  I apply few drops in the evening.

Cell Repair Night Oil. It’s an overnight boosting treatment that contains neroli, lavender, rose and mandarin. Mongongo oil regenerate the epidermis, baobab helps repair and hydrate the skin, hibiscus and pomegranate help reducing oxidant stress. It’s an overnight boost of vitamins to help hydrated your skin and regenerate and protect the barrier. Next day you wake up with a glowy skin. I massage it every few night a week.

Hope this mini guide was useful, let us know if you have any question or if you tried these products!
