Here we are talking about travelling during a global pandemic. But it’s just a matter of time and we can go back to explore the world. On the meantime, we can dream about our next destination.
Dreamland, made of nature and sustainable way of living. Did you know that the Netherland is heavily populated and more than 60% of household waste is sorted, collected, and recycled? By 2010 Holland also aims to produce 9% of its electricity from renewable resources. How incredible?
Let’s talk about Amsterdam, here few thing to keep in mind on your visit.
NOT EVERYWHERE YOU GO THE PRICES ARE THE SAME
Amsterdam is a tourist place, and as one, around the centre, prices in shops are way higher than usual! The secret is, more you move out of the centre, cheaper shops are! Especially if you want to buy souvenirs or buy in a coffee shop. Sounds crazy, right? If you like to bring a souvenir home for your family and friend check it out, Waterlooplein Market. It’s a vintage market, but you can also find a lot of souvenir for a good deal.
CAFE AND COFFEE SHOP ARE NOT THE SAME THING!
Coffeeshops in Holland are allowed to sell small amounts of cannabis. They must not sell to anyone under 18 and sell more than 5g to any customer. Other Hard drugs are prohibited. Do not smoke cannabis and drink alcohol on the street, is not legal. As rules can change, always ask when you get into a coffee shop, they will know the latest update.
How does coffeeshop work? Is like going to the supermarket! You have a menù where you can buy whatever you like. You can also decide to consume something like a coffee, hot chocolate or tea while smoke inside.
AMSTERDAM IT’S NOT EVERYTHING TO SEE IN NETHERLAND
In your trip to the Netherland, please do not only visit Amsterdam. Netherland is one of the best places to discover if you love nature. One of the main attraction, TULIPS! The tulip season runs from March to May, particularly from mid/late March to the end of May. There are three main places where you can see fabulous expanses of tulips:
“Kop van Noord-Holland“, “Noordoostpolder” and the most famous: Lisse. Definitely great for a daily trip! Also, so many beautiful cities and areas that deserve a visit on a daily trip. Some of my favourite: Rotterdam, Utrecht, Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken & Edam, Giethoorn.
To give you an idea: I went on a daily trip from Amsterdam, to the Central Station of Rotterdam. The cost of the ticket is an average of €17.40. It is affordable moving by transport there are train to almost all the destinations every 30 min max 1 hour.
Make sure to check the timetable before getting to the station, to avoid waiting too long, at the station. Keep in mind: Trains are not running 24/7! So plan your day.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: SAFE OR NOT SAFE?
Nowadays, prostitution is legal in the Netherlands but not on the streets. That is why prostitutes in Amsterdam stand up behind windows. The name “Red Light District”, comes from the red neon lights placed in the windows, around the district.
Besides what you can read around the internet; the Red Light District is a safe place to walk around. There are always people around the streets, also a lot of tourists passing by only for curiosity. If you still not confident walking around this area, you can avoid it after all the pubs and coffee shop close. Important to know: To respect the workers are not allowed pictures of them on the window.
BRING CASH WITH YOU
Most small shops, street food and coffee shop, are not accepting card payment. So it’s always good to take some cash to move around. There are different cash machine around the centre, so don’t need to rush at the airport!
RENT A BIKE AND RIDE THROUGH THE CITY
Why not rent a bike in the most bike-friendly city in the world? There are so many rental bike stores, you have to pay a daily deposit plus the rent price, and you are good to go, Like a local! Another experience you must do: a lovely boat tour onto the canals. You can book everything online before your arrival, also check if you can find anything on Airbnb. I discovered a lot of beautiful experience, and you get to spend time with locals. or ask your hotel/hostel on your arrival.
LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!
Amsterdam is full of art! Believe it or not, Amsterdam is not only freedom and sex. It’s full of street art and museums. My favourite highlights: Anna Frank House, Van Gogh museum, Stedelijk Museum and Rijksmuseum.
And we also have to talk about live events! Amsterdam is one of the main cities for music and live events. It’s full of the beautiful venue and brilliant artists. Based on your favourite style, check this out (best venue in Amsterdam). Amsterdam also the capital for full weeks music festivals like ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event). It usually lasts one full week, there are pop up stores, a lot of events during the day and night, and for all age. Also, another of the best time to visit Amsterdam!
Hope you enjoyed and don’t hesitate to drop me a comment to let me know what you think about it!
